The Adventures of Michael Rizal – the Secret World Beneath the Soil

Once upon a time, in a cosy little village, there was a curious young boy named Michael Rizal. Michael loved exploring his garden, especially after it rained, when the soil was soft and full of secrets. One sunny afternoon, as he was digging around, he found something strange—a mushroom unlike any he had ever seen before. It was colourful, sparkling with a golden glow, and seemed to whisper, “Take a nibble, Michael.”

Without thinking twice, Michael took a small bite, and in an instant, the world around him began to spin! He shrank smaller and smaller until he was as tiny as a grain of sand. Before he knew it, he was transported into a hidden, magical world beneath the soil.

Michael blinked in wonder at his new surroundings. Everywhere he looked, the soil sparkled like it was alive. Tiny roots twisted and stretched like fairy paths, and there were shimmering creatures bustling around. Suddenly, he heard a cheerful voice.

“Hey there, human! Welcome to the Soil Kingdom!”

Michael turned to see a long, wiggly creature with a big smile. “I’m Nemmy the Nematode,” said the creature proudly, extending what seemed to be a tiny, wobbly hand. Michael shook it, smiling back. Nemmy looked like a little worm but with a happy, squiggly face that instantly made Michael feel at home.

As they walked through the soil, Michael noticed another character—round and bouncy with a friendly, bubbly laugh. “Hello! I’m Teria the Bacterium,” she said, giggling. “I’m a microbe! We help make the soil healthy so plants can grow strong!”

Michael was fascinated and asked, “What do you all do here?”

“Well,” Teria explained, “we help plants grow by bringing them special nutrients and minerals from the soil. And the plants give us something yummy in return—it’s called exudates. It’s a sweet, sticky food they share through their roots. It’s like our magical snack!”

“Wow!” Michael said, his eyes wide. “So you all work together like one big team?”

“Exactly!” Nemmy said, doing a happy wiggle. “The plants give us their delicious exudates, and we bring them all the nutrients they need to grow big and strong. Everyone is happy, and the soil stays healthy.”

But as Michael explored further, he noticed that some parts of the soil looked dark and lifeless. The once-busy microbes seemed sluggish, unhappy and sick. Michael asked, “What happened here? Why does it look so sad?”

Teria sighed and began to tell him a story. “A long time ago, this whole soil kingdom was lively and full of life. The plants gave us plenty of food, and we helped them grow. But one day, a man from a chemical factory convinced the farmer to try something new—a type of plant food that came from a bottle.”

Nemmy shook his head sadly. “Once the plants started getting this chemical food, they stopped giving us exudates. They didn’t need us anymore… or so they thought.”

“But without the exudates, many of our microbe friends couldn’t survive,” Teria added, her voice soft. “And without us, the plants didn’t get all the minerals and nutrients they needed from the soil. They grew weaker and sicker. Pests started attacking them, and diseases spread. The soil was no longer alive… it was just dirt.”

Michael’s heart sank as he looked around. The once-vibrant soil was now filled with dark patches where life had disappeared. He saw the plants above struggling, their leaves turning yellow and brittle.

“But there must be a way to fix it!” Michael exclaimed. “There has to be a way to bring back the life to the soil!”

Meeting Zome, the Wise Fungus

Just then, a deep, wise voice echoed through the soil. “There is a way, young Michael.”

Michael turned to see a tall, mysterious figure with a flowing, web-like cloak. It was Zome, the wise old fungus. Zome was part of the mycorrhizal fungi, which built intricate networks called the “rhizome” to connect the roots of plants, helping them share resources and communicate.

“Hello, Michael,” Zome said with a gentle smile. “I build magical pathways between plants, connecting their roots into a great underground web. We fungi work with plants to find water and minerals, and in return, they share their exudates with us too. But we need a diverse mix of plants to keep this network strong.”

Michael listened in awe as Zome continued, “When humans used chemicals, they disrupted this delicate balance. The plants stopped working with us microbes, and the soil began to die. But with your help, we can rebuild this magical web.”

The Plan to Save the Soil

Michael’s mind was racing with ideas. He had learned so much about how plants, microbes, and fungi worked together to keep the soil alive. Suddenly, he had an idea. “What if we plant lots of different types of plants? Each plant could bring something special to the soil, and we could bring back the microbes and fungi!”

Zome nodded approvingly. “Exactly, young one. A mix of plants will create a rich home for all kinds of microbes. Each plant family shares different exudates, attracting different microbes that make the soil healthier. With this diversity, the soil will begin to heal.”

Nemmy wiggled excitedly. “And we’ll have food again! We’ll be able to help the plants grow big and strong!”

Michael beamed. “Let’s do it! Let’s bring back life to the soil!”

Back to the Surface and a New Beginning

After learning so much, Michael found himself back in his garden, holding a packet of seeds. He planted 16 different kinds of plants, each from a different plant family, just as Zome had suggested. Day by day, the soil began to change. The microbes returned, buzzing happily as they brought nutrients to the plants. The plants grew lush and green, and the soil was rich and alive again.

The farmers in the village heard about Michael’s magical garden and came to see it for themselves. They were amazed to see how healthy the plants were without any expensive chemicals.

One farmer, in particular, was so moved that he shouted, “This is it! This is the way to fix the soil and help our planet. We don’t need to do the microbes’ job! WE ARE MEN, NOT MICROBES!”

The farmers laughed, but they understood. Inspired, they each went to the seed shop and bought a mix of different seeds to start their own multi-plant gardens. They saw that by working with nature instead of against it, they could grow healthy plants, fix carbon back into the soil, and help the Earth heal.

A World Full of Life Again

As time passed, Michael’s village became famous for its rich, healthy soil and vibrant gardens. People from all over came to learn about the magical way that plants, microbes, and fungi could work together to grow food and restore the land. The air became fresher, the water clearer, and animals returned to the fields and forests.

Michael’s adventure in the soil taught everyone that even the smallest creatures have a big role to play. By planting diverse gardens and letting the microbes do their job, people found a simple way to take care of the Earth.

And as Michael looked out over the lush fields, he knew that the world was changing for the better—one tiny microbe at a time.

The End… (the beginning)
